The formal inquest into the cause of death of a nine-year-old girl three weeks after she had an operation on her appendix will be opened in Cavan courthouse today.

Mr Paul Kelly, the coroner for Cavan, will hear evidence identifying the deceased as Frances Sheridan and the medical cause of her death. A date for a full hearing will then be set.

Frances died three weeks after the operation at Cavan General Hospital. Two days before her death, Frances complained of stomach pains and was taken to the A&E unit at the hospital.

Her family was told Frances had a stomach bug and she was sent home. On February 1st she again reported stomach pains and started vomiting blood. An ambulance was called but Frances died before it arrived.

Mr Kelly received the results of a post-mortem from the State pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy. Details of this report will be revealed during the inquest.
