An independent inquiry is to be held into the death of a patient at the Central Mental Hospital, Dublin, last week.
It is believed the man died a few hours after an incident in which he allegedly had to be restrained by staff. He died on Wednesday, September 12th.
The man was a British national in his mid-30s. His body was returned to Britain after a post-mortem was carried out.
An independent inquiry is now being held at the request of the hospital into the circumstances of the man's death.
The inquiry, comprising three members, will be headed by the chief executive of the Mental Health Association, Mr Brian Howard, with a representative of a health board from a different region and a consultant psychiatrist.
A spokesperson for the East Coast Area Health Board confirmed that a patient had died at the hospital on September 12th and that an independent inquiry was being held. Such an inquiry would be normal procedure when a psychiatric patient died in hospital, he said.
A Department of Health spokesperson said they would not comment on individual cases, but any death in a psychiatric hospital would be reported to the Inspector of Mental Hospitals.
