Investigation into BSE case in beef herd
The Department of Agriculture and Food has begun a special investigation into the latest case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) because of the age of the animal.
The five-year-old cow was found in a beef-producing herd in Co Cavan, making it the 32nd case of the year.
However, because the EU had certified that the animal disease controls on animal feed in Ireland were "optimally stable" since January 1st, 1998, animals born after that date should not be infected with the disease.
