Coastguard in two rescues off west coast
Coastguard services on the west coast were involved in two rescue missions yesterday.
At around 6pm Valentia coastguard received a distress call from a yacht which had broken its rudder about 90 miles off the Kerry coast. A helicopter from Shannon and an RAF aircraft were scrambled but the three-person crew did not want to be evacuated. Last night arrangements were being made for a nearby Spanish fishing trawler to tow it to shore.
Earlier, a lobster fisherman in his 30s from Co Clare was rescued after his 4.8m-boat (16ft) went aground in rough seas in the Shannon Estuary. Rescue services from Clare and Kerry located the man, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Body found at Carlingford Lough
The body of a man in his 60s was found on Warrenpoint Beach, Carlingford Lough, at 6.40am yesterday. Police said they were investigating the circumstances and cause of death, but did not believe it to be suspicious. It is believed the dead man lived locally and had been missing since Tuesday night but his name has not yet been released. - (PA)
Knife did not kill boy (15) in Belfast
A knife found close to the spot where a 15-year-old boy was killed earlier this month was not the murder weapon, police revealed yesterday.
Detectives investigating the stabbing of Thomas Devlin in the Somerton Road area of north Belfast said they were satisfied the knife was not used in the attack. However, it had not been ruled out of the invest- igation. The knife was found by a resident in the area.
The murder team issued a fresh appeal for anyone with information to contact them. Thomas was stabbed five times in the back as he and two friends walked home on the evening of August 10th after buying sweets from a local shop.
Men in heroin seizure remanded
Two men have been remanded in continuing custody following a major heroin seizure in Limerick. Appearing before Limerick District Court yesterday were Mohammad Kargbo (33), from Sierra Leone, with an address at Ann Street, Limerick, and Emmanuel Ashibogwu (25), from Nigeria, with an address at Clyde House in Limerick.
Both are charged with possession of 2.5kg of heroin for sale or supply at Hartstonge Street, Limerick, on August 18th.
Charged for having ammunition
A Limerick man was charged at the Special Criminal Court yesterday with the illegal possession of ammunition.
Alan Ryan (33) of Tullovin Bridge, Croom, was arrested yesterday at 2:55pm in Heuston Station, Dublin. He was carrying 149 rounds of 9mm ammunition. He was remanded in custody pending a bail application.
Motorcylist dies in accident
A motorcyclist was killed in a road traffic accident yesterday in Co Antrim. Jaye Devine (26), from Castle Park, Antrim, died after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a car at around 5.30pm at the Steeple Industrical Estate in Antrim town. Police have appealed for witnesses.
16 months for taking two cars
A man who stole the keys of a car from motor dealers and drove off in it was jailed for 16 months yesterday. Matthew Fahey (27), Cappagh Avenue, Finglas, pleaded guilty in Dublin District Court to taking the keys of a Volkswagen Passat from Drogheda Motors on March 7th.
He also admitted taking the keys of a Land Cruiser from a chemical factory in Ashbourne on January 28th. Both vehicles were recovered in car-parks.
