Woman dies after being hit by ambulance
The 27-year-old woman, struck by an ambulance when she went to the assistance of other road accident victims, has died. Gloria Corrigan, Emyvale, Co Monaghan, died yesterday at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
Ms Corrigan had been travelling on the N3 Dundalk to Castleblayney road when she came across the scene of a car crash early on Sunday morning. She left her car to help the victims when she was struck by an ambulance on the way to the scene.
A 42-year-old motorcyclist died after his bike struck a cow in Barnaghy, Newcastle West, Co Limerick, at about 1am yesterday.
The car passenger who died in a crash at Skerries Road, Rush, Co Dublin, on Sunday was named as Janusz Szostakiewiez (32), a Polish man, who lived in Balbriggan, Co Dublin.
An Post denies mail backlog
An Post has said there is no backlog of post at any of its four mail centres in Dublin, Cork, Athlone and Portlaoise, contrary to figures released by the Communications Workers' Union (CWU) last week.
A company spokeswoman said yesterday there were serious manpower problems because absenteeism had doubled to 9 per cent in Dublin. An Post wants the CWU to lift its ban on the use of casual workers. The union said any recruitment embargo had been put in place by An Post.
No foul play in Mullingar death
Gardaí in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, have ruled out foul play in relation to the death of a man whose body was found close to the town on Sunday morning, after the results of a postmortem. The body were found by ESB workers in a lane off the Castlepollard Road.
Meath school bus crash report
The report into the Co Meath school bus crash which claimed the lives of five teenage girls last May will be published within the next seven to 10 days, Bus Éireann has said.
The Bus Éireann investigation into the crash on the Navan to Kentstown Road on May 23rd was due to be completed last August. However, the independent committee established by the company said it needed more time to complete its inquiries.
Schools to support Alzheimer day
Primary and secondary schools throughout the country are being encouraged to support a non-uniform day next Friday in aid of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. The aim of "Alzheimer Hero Day" is to educate children and young people, many of whom may already be affected by dementia.
Man held after cocaine find
Gardaí were last night questioning a 41-year-old non-national after customs officials at Cork airport found seven kilos of cocaine with a street value of almost €500,000 in his luggage. It is understood the man, who has a British passport, had travelled from Nigeria to Amsterdam and on to Cork.
