High-performing school students in the midlands have been honoured by a third-level institution long before they reach college-going age.
Some 120 students who got straight As in business studies in this year's Junior Cert were given special awards by Athlone's Institute of Technology.
"As the only higher education institution in the region, we are acutely aware of the importance of encouraging young people to persist with their studies and to realise their full potential," said college president Prof Ciarán Ó Catháin.
Drawn from 25 schools from counties Westmeath, Offaly, Longford, Roscommon and Galway, the students were presented with a parchment by Professor Ó Catháin.
Their schools are also to receive a commemorative plate.
John Cusack, head of the college's business department, said: "For the recipients, this honour may provide further encouragement towards a future business-related qualification."
