Intel Corp said today it will produce the Pentium 4 chip, the company's highest-performance microprocessor for desktop computers, in Malaysia, the country’s Bernama news agency said.

Intel, which employs 3,400 people in Ireland, will also open a new network design centre in Malaysia, its firstever in Asia, to boost its micropressor design competency, Mr Barret said.

Intel has earmarked $11.5 billion for capital expenditure this year, allowing it to develop and introduce new products.

Mr Barrett said Intel would conduct a feasibilitystudy to see if it needed to reduce its 8,000-strong Malaysian workforce to cut costs.

"While sales had been affected by the global downturn, Malaysia remained astrong base in the region for Intel and there was no plan to shift operationsto another country," he added.

Intel has two plants in Malaysia, one in northern Penang state and anotherin neighbouring Kedah.
