An international police operation involving the United States and Canada arrested 14 people and seized two boats off the coast of French Guiana carrying about five tons of cocaine, officials said.
The 14 detainees were Spanish, Colombian, Chilean and Greek. The two boats were seized by Spanish officials, the US Drug Enforcement Administration and Canada's mounted police around 1,000 miles off the French Guiana coast in South America, he said.
Spain is a major European entry point for drugs and contraband coming from North Africa and Latin America.
