The chairman of the Community Relations Council in Northern Ireland, Mr Jonathan Bardon, has admitted there appeared to be "a depressingly inexorable decline in respect for difference" during the period of the annual report up until March 1997, published today.

In a foreword he said, however, that while the events surrounding Drumcree 1996 had damaged relations, "links forged in previous years held despite intense strain".
