Gardai are not satisfied that a fire in which a 12-year-old boy died in Tallaght was started accidentally.

The boy, who has not yet been officially named by gardai, died at about 5 a.m. last Saturday after a fire broke out in a makeshift den built by local youths at Rossfield Avenue, Tallaght.

Gardai are currently examining CCTV footage taken in the area, which they say shows that a number of people were in the vicinity at the time of the fire.

Forensic investigators examined the scene at the weekend. Chemical analysis of the evidence gathered will now take place, but the results may not be known for some days.

Gardai say investigators will be trying to determine whether an accelerant - a substance used to spread an intentionally-set fire - might have been used. They would also be looking for "any evidence of anything suspicious".

The fire occurred when the boy and a friend were having a slumber party in the den, which was located in an alleyway between a derelict shop and a house.

A post-mortem examination showed that the body died of smoke inhalation. The other boy, also aged 12, awoke during the blaze and tried to pull his friend to safety. He was treated in Tallaght Hospital for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

The den reportedly contained wooden pallets, pieces of carpeting and other material.
