An investigation was continuing today in to the death of a motorist who crashed in Cork city shortly after gardai had tried to stop the vehicle.
The collision happened at around 6pm yesterday when officers responded to a complaint of dangerous driving in the area.
As gardai in Glanmire signalled the car to stop, it drove off at speed. "The car, a grey Opel Omega, drove on the N8 via Watergrass Hill, onto the dual carriageway into the Jack Lynch tunnel and continued on past the Mahon/Blackrock interchange," said a garda spokeswoman.
"A separate garda unit observed the car driving past on the dual carriageway and then assisted the Glanmire gardai. "A short time later the car was observed by gardai to have collided with the
embankment on the South Ring Road near Vernonmount."
The male driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene and his remains were removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination, which will be carried out later today.
A Superintendent from outside the District has been appointed to investigate the incident.
