A Garda Superintendent has been appointed to inquire into the death of a man in Garda custody in Dublin.
The 43-year-old from Dublin lost consciousness in Store Street Garda Station in the city on Tuesday evening after being taken into Garda custody while uncooperative and intoxicated, a Garda statement said.
According to the statement the man had refused to get into an ambulance called to Dominic Street in the north inner city by people concerned for his safety and Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance crew alerted gardai who arrived on the scene at 7.25pm to take the man to Store Street.
Within minutes of arriving at the Garda Station the man lost consciousness and was treated by an officer trained in resuscitation, the statement continued.
He was taken to the Mater Hospital but was pronounced dead today, never having regained consciousness.
State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy is to carry out a post mortem examination in the morning.
Garda Superintendent Thady Muldoon, based at Kevin Street in Dublin, has been asked to carry out an internal inquiry into the case.
