Sinn Fein MP Conor Murphy has denied that a threat to a witness in the Paul Quinn murder inquiry came from the IRA.

Sinn Fein MP Conor Murphy has denied that a threat to a witness in the Paul Quinn murder inquiry came from the IRA.

Mr Quinn (21) was beaten to death after being lured to a remote farm building in Co Monaghan last October. His family claim he was killed by the Provisional IRA after he fell out with one of its members.

Mr Murphy has consistently denied IRA involvement in the murder.

In a statement today regarding allegations of a threat to one of the witnesses, he said: "More than two weeks ago, the police visited this family. We made contact with this young man's family. We became aware that the threat to him didn't pertain from any organisation whatsoever."

"There was no organisation specified by the PSNI. We offer our full support to the family," he added.

The British and Irish governments have stated their belief that Mr Quinn was not a criminal.

The Independent Monitoring Commission has indicated that former or current members of the Provisionals were involved in the brutal beating.

PSNI officers are assisting the Garda in a joint operation to find the killers.
