Gunmen ambushed a member of Iraq's Governing Council today as she travelled to Baghdad from the city of Najaf, but she escaped unharmed, an aide to another member of the council said.
Several people were wounded during the attack on the convoy carrying Governing Council Member Ms Salama al-Khafaji, who was in Najaf for negotiations with members of a Shia militia who have clashed with US forces in the city.
"Our understanding is that there were some injuries but that she was not among the injured, according to initial indications," said an aide to Governing Council member Mr Mohammed Bahr al-Uloum, who was also in Najaf for the negotiations.
