Ireland 2 Italy 1
Ireland's women moved to the top of Pool B at the Hockey European Nations Cup after a 2-1 win over Italy maintained their 100 per cent record this morning.
However, with main rivals England and Germany - both with vastly superior goal difference - playing later in the day their stay at the summit may be a short one.
But Ireland can do no more than win the matches put in front of them and although they could not match England's 8-0 demolition job on the Italians on Monday, they did what was required to claim their second successive victory.
University of Limerick's Eimear Cregan opened the scoring in only the fourth minute, only moments after putting a penalty corner wide, and three minutes before half-time vice-captain Lynsey McVicker of Ballymoney netted her second goal of the tournament from a set-piece.
There were 13 minutes remaining when Ballymoney goalkeeper Angela Platt saved a penalty corner from Giorgia Carrdori only to immediately concede another set-piece from which the Italian scored a consolation.
