Ireland's Turnbull claims silver at Student Games

Ireland's Gareth Turnbull today claimed silver in the men's 1,500m at the 21st World University Games in Beijing.

Ireland's Gareth Turnbull today claimed silver in the men's 1,500m at the 21st World University Games in Beijing.

Turnbull clocked a time of 3mins 44.21 when chasing home Spaniard P.A. Esteso, who claimed gold in 3 mins 43.98 secs. Alexis Abraham of France was third.

The 22-year-old Belfastman, a member of the Irish team which was third in the European Senior Cross Country last December, is part of the Physical Education programme at Loughborough University in England.

James Nolan, a member of the Irish team which travelled to Edmonton for the World Championships earlier this month, reached the final of the 1,500m but failed to finish the race.
