High winds this morning continued to disrupt travel in the south of the country.

The adverse weather led to the cancellation of the early morning flight from Kerry airport at Farranfore. Later flights have also been delayed along with the 7.30 am flight. The airport in mid-Kerry is in the centre of one of the worst affected areas in the southwest, with power still out in thousands of homes in the region.

ESB crews have been drafted in from as far as Killybegs in Donegal to help repair broken lines. Over 1250 homes were still without electricity in Tralee and around 1,340 in Killarney this morning.

Gerard Deenihan Technical Services Manager with the ESB in the Southwest said with that number of homes and businesses still out, some 10 crews were being brought to Kerry from Cavan, Donegal, Mayo and elsewhere.

Whilst they were doing their utmost, he could not guarantee power would be back tonight.

County council workers have also been working round the clock to clear roads of fallen trees and large piles of wood and other debris remain strewn on minor roads.

Sheds and outbuildings were severely damaged.
