The Nigerian ambassador to Ireland has appointed a diplomat to liaise with the family of the three-year-old boy who died after he became trapped in a lift in Galway earlier this week.

A spokesman for ambassador Felix Y Pwol said yesterday an embassy counsellor was travelling to Galway to meet Omolara Akinyede, mother of Solomon Soremekun, who died from injuries sustained in a lift shaft in an office building in the city on Monday afternoon.

The intervention followed an appeal by Mayor Pádraig Conneely who contacted the embassy yesterday. He met Ms Akinyede earlier in the week to offer his sympathies on behalf of the city.

No funeral arrangements have been confirmed for the boy who, with his mother and three sisters, had been in Galway just over a fortnight. Ms Akinyede was in the Department of Social Protection offices on the first floor of the Hynes building when the incident occurred. The boy died at the scene.
