A closure order is served where there is likely to be a grave and immediate danger to public health. It can refer to the immediate closure of all or part of the food premises, or all or some of its activities.
A Prohibition Order is issued if the activities carry a serious risk to public health from a particular product, class, batch or item of food. The effect is to prohibit the sale of the product, either temporarily or permanently.
Dr Pamela Byrne, chief executive of the authority said in the lead up to Christmas food safety “must be paramount”.
“There can be zero tolerance for negligent practices that potentially put consumers’ health at risk,” she said. She warned it was up to the businesses themselves to ensure they were compliant.
Information on compliance standards is available from the FSAI at its website.
