Irish agencies launch appeals

Concern has decided to extend its relief operation in El Salvador in response to the latest earthquake

Concern has decided to extend its relief operation in El Salvador in response to the latest earthquake. Speaking from San Salvador, Dublin-born Mr Ros O'Sullivan said Concern was moving immediately to provide blankets and shelter material in areas affected by the earthquake.

Mr O'Sullivan confirmed that an initial allocation of £25,000 would be made to cover the cost of the operation. The Irish-founded agency has already allocated £120,000 in the aftermath of last month's massive earthquake.

Mr O'Sullivan pointed out that the two earthquakes had different epicentres, with the latest one centred on an area 20 km east of the capital.

Meanwhile, UNICEF Ireland yesterday relaunched its emergency appeal for El Salvador. "Once again, the children and their families of El Salvador are suffering from untold psychological pain due to the loss of their homes, separation from loved ones and their livelihoods," said Ms Maura Quinn, executive director of UNICEF Ireland.

"We cannot allow these vulnerable children to suffer alone," Ms Quinn said. "We must respond immediately and let them know that we care."
