Renowned Irish author John Moriarty has died, it was announced today.
The Co Kerry-born poet and philosopher had been battling cancer. He was 69.
Mr Moriarty, who is survived by his long-term partner Eileen Moore, had a total of eight books published over 13 years - the first, Dreamtime, was published in 1994 and revised in 1999.
His last work, Serious Sounds, a short book about growing up in Kerry, was published earlier this year. Other books included Nostos, an autobiography published in 2001.
A year ago this month he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the National University of Ireland, Galway, for his contribution to the arts.
Educated at Listowel and University College Dublin, he taught English literature at the University of Manitoba in Canada for six years until 1971 when he returned to Ireland to concentrate on his writing.
