Irish Biscuits, the maker of Jacob's biscuits, will cut 100 jobs at its Tallaght factory as part of a restructuring plan by French parent company Danone.

The firm employs 500 people in Tallaght and 600 people in Ireland. A spokesperson said the job losses will be staggered over two years and will entail early retirement and voluntary redundancies although compulsory redundancies are expected.

Managing director of Irish Biscuits Mr Neil Sanderson said a mix of increased competition, falling sales and over-capacity at the Tallaght plant led to the job losses.

Danone announced today it would close six of its European biscuit factories and cut about 1,800 jobs to reduce costs and cut production.

Most of the job cuts will come in France, where two factories will be shut and 806 jobs lost. The measures will also affect factories in Italy, Belgium, Holland, Hungary, and Britain.
