Ian McKeever from Co Wicklow man has broken the world record for reaching the summit of the seven highest mountains on each continent.

The 37-year-old from Bray successfully climbed Denali Mount McKinley in the US yesterday to complete his climb in a record in 154 days. The record had previously been held by Canadian, Daniel Griffith, who completed it in 187 days.

Afterwards Mr McKeever said the weather was particularly difficult and it required three attempts to reach the summit.

"I feel very proud to be Irish at the moment and I feel great. I can't believe I've finally done it", he said. Using a satellite phone from his camp this morning at 14,000ft, he said it had taken him almost 12 hours to descend from the summit.

He is expected to return to Dublin later in the week.

The challenge was to raise funds for The Irish Osteoporosis Society and Sophia Housing and it is anticipated that he will raise a total of €140,000.
