The total number of jobs advertised last month rose by compared with the same month last year, according to the Bank of Ireland's latest job index.
The index, which was released this morning showed that recruitment in the IT sector is up by 66 per cent, but that advertised jobs in the public sector has dropped by 23 per cent since the index began in March 2002.
Bank of Ireland economist Mr Dan McLaughlin says recruitment advertising has been rising for three consecutive months, with the November index suggesting that the pace of recruitment is accelerating.
Mr Tom Comerford of business banking said the recent decentralisation proposal in the Budget was unlikely to reverse the downward trend in the public sector, although it would have a positive impact on local employment in areas such as retail and construction.
Manufacturing jobs show a 39 cent rise, but construction jobs are down 3 per cent. Retail jobs are up 42 per cent, with the professional and leisure sector showing 10 per cent growth. Bank of Ireland says these figures suggest that retailers are preparing for a busy Christmas.
