More than 70 Irish lawyers have issued a statement claiming the proposed war on Iraq, and the Government's "practical support" for it, is in breach of principles grounding Irish and international law.

The list of those lawyers opposing the war includes Ms Ivana Bacik, Mr Vincent Browne, Mr Michael O'Higgins SC and Ms Mary Ellen Ring SC.

"Whether or not the Security Council passes a resolution purporting to authorise war, the planned war against Iraq is unnecessary and unjustified," the statement issued this morning says.

"The Irish Government is aware of the intentions of the US but continues to give practical assistance to the preparation of war.

"In Ireland, when force is used without justification, anyone who knowingly helps another to cause serious harm or death is liable to be convicted and imprisoned," the statement adds.

The lawyers call on Irish citizens to communicate their oppposition to war to the Government and TDs and to "use all peaceful and lawful means to oppose the proposed war against Iraq."
