An Irish lorry driver was one of four men arrested this week accused of helping to smuggle drugs from North Africa to Ireland and Britain.
The Irishman, said to be in his early 20s and originally from Dublin, was arrested by Spanish police along with two Britons and an Argentinian, in Fuengirola. He was driving an Irish-registered refrigerated lorry with a load of vegetables from North Africa to Ireland.
Members of the special Anti-Drug and Organised Crime Unit intercepted the lorry with its load of Moroccan aubergines, cucumbers and peppers and found 382 kg of hashish.
The Irishman and the other three men, appeared before a judge in Malaga who ordered them to be held in jail pending a trial. He also ordered that the vegetables should be given to the poor and needy of the area.
