Irish property developer Garrett Kelleher is to fund a new 124-storey tower in Chicago which will be the tallest free-standing building in North America.
The $1.2 billion development of 400 North Lake Shore Drive will be 2,000 feet or 610 metres high eclipsing the Sears Tower in Chicago and the CN Tower in Toronto.
Mr Kelleher, the executive chairman of Shelbourne Developments, is understood to have paid around $64 million for the site.
The tower - designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava - will include 300 apartments and a 5-star hotel.
