Irish student hurt in rickshaw accident

A Northern Irish student has been badly hurt after her scarf got tangled in the wheel of rickshaw in Edinburgh.

A Northern Irish student has been badly hurt after her scarf got tangled in the wheel of rickshaw in Edinburgh.

The 22-year-old woman, who has not been named, is being treated in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, whereher condition is not thought to be life threatening.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said she suffered a crushed windpipe, a broken neck bone, a stroke and severe bruising.

Police are probing the accident which happened as the student was travelling with two friends in the rickshaw in Edinburgh's Regent Road.

Her fellow passengers and the rickshaw operator fought to free the student after she was dragged off the vehicle and the emergency services quickly arrived at the scene.

Rickshaws are widely used in Dublin as a popular method of transport around the city among late night revellers.
