Irish Tesco staff agree pay deal

Approximately 10,000 Tesco staff in the Mandate union have voted to accept a new pay deal.

Approximately 10,000 Tesco staff in the Mandate union have voted to accept a new pay deal.

Staff voted by 77 per cent for the new terms, which will result in a wage increase of 11 per cent over two years .

Under the terms, workers will get an immediate 6 per cent wage rise - backdated to September 2006 with two 2.5 per cent rises to follow.

The agreement comes after months of talks on working hours, profit sharing and pensions. Tesco employs alsmost 12,500 staff in Ireland. The remaining staff are either represnted by Siptu or are management. Spitu recently agreed a similar pay deal with the retailer.

Linda Tanham, Mandate organiser, said she hoped such a wide ranging agreement would become the norm for the retail industry.
