Carl O’Brien has been appointed to the post of Chief Reporter.
This is a new role which will involve in-depth news and features coverage and investigative reports across a variety of current affairs.
He has been Social Affairs Correspondent of The Irish Timessince 2004 and has provided extensive coverage of issues ranging from disability, mental health and suicide to the treatment of children in the criminal justice system and in State care.
He was named Disability Journalist of the Year in the National Media Awards in June for an examination of residential services for people with disabilities. In 2008 he won the Justice Media Award for Court Reporting in the Print Media for a series of articles “Inside the Children’s Court”.
From Glounthaune, Co Cork, he joined The Irish Timesin 2003. He was a winner of the Young Journalist of the Year award in three successive years and was formerly political correspondent of the Irish Examiner.
