The Department of Foreign Affairs last night confirmed that an Irish holidaymaker had been found dead in the Santa Ponza resort in Spain yesterday, writes Conor Lally.

The man is believed to be a 34- year-old Dubliner who had been living in Co Clare.

The Department said it was offering assistance to the dead man's family but was unable to say how he had died.

He is believed to have travelled to Santa Ponza last weekend in a stag party. There were no details as to when his remains would be flown home.

The man is the second Irish holidaymaker to die in Spain this month. Mr Daniel O'Callaghan (24), from Rathmines, Dublin, died after he was attacked following a night out on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria on April 26th.

He had arrived on the island that day.

The telecommunications worker survived in hospital for two weeks, but his condition deteriorated daily before he died on May 13th.
