The Department of Foreign Affairs has advised against travelling to Kenya after warnings of possible terror attacks in the east African nation.

The Department also advised Irish citizens already in the country to "exercise caution at airports and in other places frequented by westerners such as hotels, restaurants and shopping areas."

In a statement, the Department said it had taken the decision to review its travel advice "taking into account the threat of terrorist activity."

Britain yesterday suspend flights to and from its former colony amid fears of an imminent al-Qaeda terrorist attack on a British plane.

Kenya is an increasingly popular tourist destination for Irish travellers. As Ireland does not have any direct routes to Kenya, most Irish people travelling there go through London.

Mr Tony Brazil, President of the Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA), told ireland.comthat any Irish travellers stranded by yesterday's suspension of British flights should have no difficulties in leaving as most international carriers pass through Nairobi Airport.

He said Kenya was low on the list of destinations for Irish travellers and that most going there would be people with a special interest in wildlife or photography.
