Irishman dies after attack during Caribbean robbery

AN IRISHMAN in his 40s died after he intervened in a robbery at a hotel on the Caribbean island of Dominica.

AN IRISHMAN in his 40s died after he intervened in a robbery at a hotel on the Caribbean island of Dominica.

Joe Costello, a 42-year-old Dublin native, died after reportedly being struck on the head with a cutlass, a curved blade.

The incident took place at Pagua Bay House, a boutique hotel and bar. Mr Costello intervened when a three-man gang attempted to rob the hotel.

Mr Costello had been living in the UK before moving to Dominica, where nine months ago he was appointed manager of a hotel 40km from the capital, Roseau.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said it was providing consular assistance to Mr Costello’s girlfriend and his sister.
