Denis Irwin revealed today he intends to leave Manchester United at the end of the season.
The former Republic of Ireland international, who signed a one-year deal in the summer, has decided to bring his career at Old Trafford to an end after 12 seasons.
The 35-year-old does not intend to retire from football completely though and will be looking to find a new club for next season.
"When you get to around 34 you start to think that you are facing your last season and I thought last term would be the end of it for me here," Irwin was quoted as saying in the Manchester Evening Newsnewspaper.
"But this campaign is definitely my last with United. I may play on beyond that elsewhere ,but it won't be here. You just know when it's your time and next summer will be it for me at Old Trafford".
Irwin, who started at right back in United's Charity Shield defeat by Liverpool and the Premier League opener against Fulham last Sunday, admitted a lack of Champions League action was behind his decision.
"Not playing in the big games against Valencia and Bayern Munich was a shock to me, and I was very disappointed," he added.
"I am nearly 36 and I have got to understand that I won't play in every match any more. Age is creeping up so there has to be a touch of realism now.
"But I still hope there will be some big game appearances this time. I will be battling as hard as ever to be there on those occasions".
Irwin has made 496 appearances for United since signing from Oldham for £650,000 pounds in 1990.
