Aran Islanders may inhabit an especially healthy environment but they can still benefit from changes to their lifestyle, a project has shown.
The west of Ireland heart charity, Croi, in association with the Western Health Board, carried out a 12-week pilot programme on Inis Oirr aimed at raising awareness of cardiac risks.
Forty-two of the island's 185 adult residents completed the three-month "Healthy Heart" programme. They were first assessed and their progress was monitored weekly.
Theresa Broderick, a public health nurse with the Western Health Board, says the project achieved excellent results. Thirteen participants lost 8 lb or more. Most adhered to a daily exercise regime, reduced their fat intake, consumed more fruit and vegetables and cut down on smoking - two gave up altogether.
The island shop now finds an increased demand for fruit and vegetables and stocks a wider range of low-fat products.
Croi will be hosting a "VIP/Corporate Hospitality Package" at Ballybrit next Sunday for the final day of the Galway races.
The fundraising event is for a new regional heart surgery unit for the West.
With tickets at £110 each, the event includes a champagne reception, four-course lunch with wines, private bar and Tote facilities, entertainment and a £15,000 prize fund for guests. Details are available on 091-526000.
