Israel's defence minister Mr Binyamin Ben Eliezer headed for Alexandria today, where he is expected to hold talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
"Ben Eliezer is travelling to Egypt, a major broker in Middle East peace efforts, in response to an invitation from Mubarak to discuss more than 21 months of fighting between the Israelis and Palestinians," according to Israeli officials.
The two men last met in the Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh on January 30th.
Mr Mubarak's meetings come just ahead of talks in New York this week between Arab states and the diplomatic "quartet" of the United States, the European Union, Russia and United Nations, seeking a Middle East peace.
