Israeli police arrested the brother of the West Bank leader of Palestinian leader Mr Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement overnight.

Mr Hisham Barghouti, who has Saudi nationality, was arrested as he was trying to cross Allenby bridge - the link between Jordan and the West Bank - carrying material authorities claimed could be used for weapons.

He told police he was carrying the material for use in a camera for his son who is studying in Ramallah in the West Bank and did not know it could have a military use.

His brother, Marwan, is the West Bank leader of Fatah. Israeli authorities have publicly accused him of being behind the nearly five months of renewed deadly clashes there between Israelis and Palestinians.

Israeli police also stopped the head of Palestinian preventive security police in the West Bank, Col Jibril Rajoub, as he was trying to cross the same border because he refused to have his vehicle searched.

Col Rajoub was eventually released.
