Larnaca- Israeli nationals held on suspicion of spying in Cyprus had repeated contact with an intelligence service in Israel before they were arrested, a court heard yesterday. Cypriot police arrested Mr Udi Hargov and Mr Igal Damary on November 7th after receiving reports of suspect Israeli activity in a sensitive military area, an investigating officer told the court in Larnaca.

"After the arrival of the two suspects (in Cyprus) . . . there were several phone calls by portable phone to a telephone which belongs to a specific intelligence service", the officer said. "It is based in Tel Aviv."

He said that on the night the two were caught, classified military activity was under way near their leased apartment.

The two men were remanded in custody for a further five days.
