Israeli troops based in the Jewish settlement of Gilo in east Jerusalem exchanged gunfire today with Palestinians who took up positions at Beit Jala, near Bethlehem, a military source said.
Separate gunfights also broke out between Palestinians in the village of al Khader in the same area and Israeli troops guarding the Efrat settlement to the south of Bethlehem, witnesses said.
Israeli troops opened fire with machine guns on al Khader, with bullets straying near the tourist site of the baths of Solomon.
Earlier a Palestinian had shot at the Efrat garrison from a raised building near the archeological site which was recently renovated at considerable expense, witnesses said.
