A collection of operatic masterpieces are to be staged at Johnstown Castle this year to celebrate the 56th Wexford Opera Festival

Dvorak's 'Rusalka', Weill's 'Der Silbersee' and Busoni's Arlecchino and Stravinsky's ballet Pulcinella from the European commedia dell'arte genre, will feature along side performances by the Prague Chamber Choir during the 18-day musical theatre event.

A custom-built theatre to be constructed in the grounds of the 19 thcentury Johnstown Castle, six kilometres outside Wexford town, will host this years' festival which is set to run from May 31st to June 17th.

Organisers are predicting an audience of up to 20,000 people to attend the summer event, which normally runs in the autumn, and this year boasts over 60 scheduled acts.

International conductor and artistic director for Wexford Festival Opera, David Agler said: "In the magnificent surroundings of Johnstown Castle, you will be kept on the edge of your seat by a programme that goes beyond genre-crossing to explore infinite possibilities of music theatre".

The festival has become Increasingly renowned throughout Europe, over the last half century, for its attraction of the freshest musical talent and up-and-coming directors and designers from across the world.
