AN RUC and British army patrol came under attack in Crossmaglen, South Armagh, last night. The joint security patrol of six soldiers and RUC officers was passing through Silverbridge when a crowd of two dozen men came out of a bar and confronted it. Police said they fired two warning shots and the patrol was airlifted to safety from an adjoining field.

In a separate incident, RUC officers fired plastic bullets after coming under attack last night from a crowd throwing petrol bombs on the Kilwilkie estate in Lurgan, Co Armagh. Police and soldiers had been called to the local GAA club to investigated reports of a suspect device, later declared a hoax.
