The jury in a corruption case against a former Wexford-based garda has been discharged by the judge following more than two weeks of evidence.

The jury was discharged following an application by the defence for John Joe Synnott (53) and legal submissions.

Judge Alice Doyle, sitting at Wexford Circuit Court, granted the application. The trial of Mr Synnott, who is now retired, opened on July 1st. He was charged with deceiving his superiors by producing a false traffic accident report and falsely reporting a traffic accident for the purpose of gaining advantage for himself or others and, by deception, inducing Axa Insurances to pay out €23,332 as a result.

Mr Synnott, Camblin Hill, New Ross, had pleaded not guilty to all charges. The case was put back for mention at the next Circuit Court sitting in Wexford in October.
