A judge was yesterday praised for his intervention in getting a direction from the DPP on the case of two sisters held on remand on assault charges for seven weeks because they haven't been able to raise bail of £1,000 and £500.

Mr Joe Cuddigan, solicitor, thanked Judge Jim O'Connor at Cork District Court for highlighting the delay in the case of Ms Kathleen (30) and Ms Margaret Maughan (21), held in Limerick Prison. Judge O'Connor had expressed concern on Friday at the DPP's delay.

Yesterday Insp Pat Diggin said the DPP had instructed that the assault and damage charges were to be dealt with at Cork Circuit Criminal Court on October 26th.
