July rainfall was the heaviest recorded in the Cork area since 1975 with the combined total for the summer months of June and July more than twice the normal rainfall for that period.
Overall around the country the weather was wetter than normal for July with the exceptional rainfall in parts of Co Limerick in the last 24 hours playing a significant part.
Rain in the Newcastlewest area of that county reached the equivalent of four weeks' normal rainfall with over 90 millimetres of rain recorded at Castlemahon, just a mile from the town of Newcastlewest.
In what has been described by Met Eireann as a dull month generally, temperatures were slightly down on the normal figures for the month particularly in the south-west of the country.
The highest average temperature recorded was 15.7 degrees at Shannon Airport, a location which also enjoyed the warmest day of the month at 25.2 degrees on July 24th.
The lowest air tempertaure since the early 1970s was recorded at Mullingar where a figure of just 3.6 degrees occurred on July 5th. This was part of a trend which saw temperatures lower in the first half of the month and rising during the second half.
The greatest level of sunshine was in the east of the country with Dublin Airport enjoying 156 hours while the lowest level of rainfall was recorded at Belmullet where just 54 millimetres fell during the month.
