The jury in the trial of a doctor who denied sexually assaulting two female patients at the Mater Hospital in Dublin last year has failed to reach a verdict. Judge Frank O'Donnell discharged the jury on the seventh day of the trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

The jury had deliberated for almost four hours when the forewoman told Judge O'Donnell there was no possibility of it reaching a majority verdict of either 11-1 or 10-2 on either of the two counts before it.

The 35-year-old defendant, who is from Pakistan, denied two charges of sexually assaulting two female tonsilitis patients at the Mater Hospital in Dublin on July 28th, 1997.
