The jury in the inquest into the death of a baby girl found dumped in 1973 with 40 stab wounds has retired to consider its verdict.

After hearing three and a half days of evidence, Dublin County Coroner Dr Kieron Geraghty asked them to identify the time, place and cause of death, and also decide how the baby, known only as Noleen, died.

Cynthia Owen claims she is the mother of the child, who was found in a plastic bag in a Dún Laoghaire lane way.

Ms Owen (45) came forward 12 years ago claiming the baby was born as a result of sexual abuse. She also accused her late mother of killing the infant on April 4th, 1973.

At the inquest, Mrs Owens accused four different people - referred to as A, C, D, and E during the hearing - of physically and sexually abusing her and raping her over seven years from the age of seven.

She also recalled that her mother knew about the abuse, allowed it to continue for years and on one occasion sexually assaulted her.

The coroner warned the jury that if they accept the evidence of Ms Owen they could not apportion blame for the infant's death.
