New York - A federal jury in New York decided yesterday that former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic should pay $745 million to Bosnian Muslim women who said they were raped and tortured.

The jury, after hearing a week's testimony from the plaintiffs, decided Karadzic should pay $265 million in compensatory damages and $480 million in punitive damages. Karadzic and his attorneys were not in court yesterday. He is believed to be hiding in Bosnia.

"We are going to do everything we can to find out where he has placed his assets. The judgment gives us the ability to collect it. This judgment will be recognized by other countries." said Ms Maria Vullo, a lawyer for one of the plaintiffs.
