A grenade thrown by militants today near a crowded bus stand in Indian Kashmir killed a schoolteacher and wounded 22 people.
Police said the guerrillas aimed the grenade at a police patrol in Pulwama in southern Kashmir, but it exploded on the street instead, wounding people waiting for buses.
The attack comes just days before India and Pakistan hold more talks to resolve a dispute over the region.
Rebel violence in Kashmir has cast a shadow over the eight-month-old peace process between India and Pakistan, who both claim the Himalayan region.
New Delhi says Pakistan has failed to live up to a promise to halt support for Muslim guerrillas fighting Indian rule in Kashmir.
Pakistan denies the allegations, and instead blames India for dragging its feet over discussing Kashmir, which is at the heart of decades of tension between the nuclear-armed rivals.
The two sides' foreign ministers will meet in New Delhi this weekend for more peace talks.
