A schoolgirl and six paramilitaries died in two landmine blasts in India's restless Jammu and Kashmir state today, police said.

The girl was part of a school group on a picnic to the scenic resort of Pahalgam when their bus ran over the mine. Twenty other children were wounded in the blast in the Anantnag district.

Separatist militants also set off a landmine in another part of the Himalayan region, killing six Indian paramilitaries on patrol duty, police said.

A jeep carrying the Border Security Force men was blown to pieces in the blast in Udhampur district, they added. One of the victims was a local BSF commandant.

No group has claimed responsibility for either blast.

Violence in Jammu and Kashmir has escalated since the leaders of India and Pakistan failed to make progress in the dispute over the region in a summit in July.

Officials say more than 2,200 people have been killed since the January this year.
