A nephew of murdered Limerick crime figure Kieran Keane has been jailed for three months for being drunk and disorderly just 24 hours after his uncle's killers lost an appeal against their murder conviction.
Liam Keane (23), Singland Gardens, Limerick, denied that he was celebrating Wednesday's judgment at the Court of Criminal Appeal where the appeal of five men convicted of Kieran Keane's murder was rejected .
Limerick District Court heard yesterday that gardaí arrested Keane who admitted being highly intoxicated and abusive towards gardaí and the owner of a snooker club at 11.35am on Thursday and pleaded guilty.
Defence solicitor John Devane said his client was not drinking out of "triumphalism" but simply had a few drinks with his family because they were happy the appeal was behind them.
The court heard that Keane was drinking wine at 8am on Thursday in St Mary's Park when he shouted profanities at gardaí patrolling the area.
Before imposing sentence on Keane, who has 42 previous convictions, Judge Tom O'Donnell said he had a "serious attitude problem" and said the level of abuse he had dished out to gardaí was "unacceptable to say the least".
He also made reference to the fact that Keane had three previous convictions for similar type offences and jailed him for three months.
Nicholas Lyons (25), St Ita's Street St Mary's Park, was also jailed yesterday after pleading guilty to similar charges.
The court head that Lyons was drinking with Keane on the night in question.
Judge O'Donnell was told that Lyons threatened to put a bullet in the head of a garda when he was in custody at Henry Street Garda station.
He also urged the garda to "come down to the Island and I'll sort you out."
The judge said he had been "outrageous" and jailed him for three months.
The judge also activated a six- month suspended sentence imposed on Lyons last April for a drink-driving charge.
